Gary Lineker described Tottenham Hotspur captain Hugo Lloris’ World Cup campaign as ‘really good’ during the BBC’s coverage of Argentina vs France today.
Lloris suffered heartbreak with France today after a dramatic final in Qatar. Didier Deschamps’ men fought back from losing positions three times throughout 120 minutes of action, but fell to defeat on penalties.
Argentina looked to be in complete control with just ten minutes of the game left after goals from Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria in the first-half.
But Kylian Mbappe made no mistake from the penalty spot in the 80th minute after Randal Kolo Muani was brought down by Nicolas Otamendi. The Paris Saint-Germain star then grabbed his second of the game just two minutes later to extra-time force.
Lloris was called into action before the game was over though as he denied Messi a spectacular winning goal from long-range.
🏆 WORLD CUP NEWS
The 35-year-old could do nothing about Messi’s second goal of the game in extra-time after initially making a brilliant stop to deny Lautaro Martinez. Mbappe completed his hat-trick from the spot to force penalties, but Lloris was unable to save any of Argentina’s efforts from 12-yards.
Lineker on Lloris
Lineker praised the Spurs skipper for his displays throughout the tournament on BBC One today but did mention his lack of success in the penalty shootout.
The former Tottenham striker said Lloris made a ‘good save’ to deny Messi right at the end of the game and went on to describe his World Cup campaign in two-words.
He said: “Lloris had a really good World Cup. But he does not save penalties.
Lloris will be devastated after France came so close to becoming world champions once again.
It will probably be his last World Cup appearance for Les Bleus, after already winning it under Deschamps last time out.
There will be mixed emotions when Lloris returns to Hotspur Way, with Cristian Romero on the winning side in Qatar today.
